Hilary Duff is quite busy these days juggling her time between her kids, her TV show and her businesses. Her schedule is pretty hectic that it’s hard to believe that she still finds enough time to eat every three hours and chew solid food.

But it’s actually her diet that gives her all the energy she needs to carry out all her tasks and even go the extra mile when needed. When mindbodygreen caught up with the actress, she shared her food philosophy, which is the main point of the diet she’s practicing.

According to the “Lizzie McGuire” star, she’s started counting macros after having her daughter Banks 11 months ago. She said she’s never done this before, even when she had her first child, a boy named Luca, who is now seven years old.

Duff said she did this because she felt the need to lose the baby weight prior to going back to filming her hit TV series “Younger.” The singer-actress disclosed that with her new eating plan, she does not feel deprived of carbs and sugar like all the other diets she’s tried before.

The macro diet involves counting macros, which is short for macronutrients —protein, fats and carbohydrates. It is said to go a step further than calorie counting because one should not only eat within his or her calorie goal but also with the right ratios of the different macronutrients.

“Every time I’ve dieted before and cut carbs and sugar, there’s been such a daunting feeling of ‘I’m being deprived, I’m being deprived.’ I’m a really balanced person, and I like to have freedom. With the macros it’s cool because I haven’t had to cut anything out that I love. It’s just about making sure my body is getting the right amount of protein and fat and carbohydrates—and then I get to choose what those are,” Duff said.

The former Disney star pointed out that what’s good with this diet is you can really enjoy what you eat. Other diets tend to be restrictive, like only allow a soup for dinner, and Duff does not want anything like that.

What’s also good about following the macro diet is it enabled Hilary to shed 10 to 11 pounds before she started shooting for her TV Land series. And she lost all the weight while also feeling “really energized” and despite munching on food every three hours.

“I am really being healthy right now, and for the first time in my life, I am actually really enjoying it,” she said of her eating plan. Duff then shared that the best part is she’s still able to enjoy pizza, breakfast sandwiches and burgers while doing this diet.
