You might’ve seen it parked outside of schools, daycare centers, birthday parties, or even churches — the 40-foot bright green Fun Bus would’ve been hard to miss.
Bob Wood and his wife Pam are the owners of Fun Bus Hampton Roads where they provide a mini gym on wheels for kids ages 18 months to 7 years old to warm-up and stretch, then run jump, swing, and more.
“We’re kind of like a gym in a box, we come to your business, your school, or in the case of a festival, or wherever,” Wood said. “We come, we provide entertainment, and we bring everything to you…when it’s finished, we pack up and we’re gone.”
Buses never move while kids are at play and are climate-controlled for fun in any weather.
Equipment and interactive activities on fun buses range from balance beams to rock walls and trampolines depending on the themed-lesson coaches have planned for that week.
Once their time is up, kids take the slide to exit out the back door.
Their three buses are built for fun, but Wood also said the company plays a major part in childhood education by instilling a sense of fitness early on and teaching skills for development in their weekly one-hour classes.
“It’s a motivator for the kids, we pull in the parking lot and the kids say ‘Fun Bus is here!’ and they’re really excited about it,” he said. “Parents say when their kids are getting ready for school, they know it’s Fun Bus day and are excited to go.”
Headquartered in New Jersey, the Fun Bus franchise operates 22 locations across the nation with the Woods operating out of Hayes to serve the Hampton Roads region.
