Selected from among 12 outstanding youth in Leon and Gadsden counties, Curtisa Brown has been named the Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Big Bend (BGCBB). The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.
Now in its 72nd year, sponsored by the Walt Disney Company, the Youth of the Year program honors our nation’s most awe-inspiring young people on their path to great futures and encourages all kids to lead, succeed and inspire. Among a field of 30 candidates, 16-year old Curtisa recently placed 4th in the Florida State Youth of the Year competition and received a $500 prize and laptop computer for her achievement.
“We are very proud of Curtisa who has overcome tremendous odds and personal challenges to excel academically and socially. She truly epitomizes “Youth of the Year” and is a wonderful asset to our community as well as an outstanding role model for her fellow Club members,” said BGCBB Area Director, Kacy Dennis.
Since joining the Club at age 10, Curtisa has participated in numerous programs that she says has enriched her life. These programs focus on education, health, and wellness and character and citizenship.
Curtisa especially enjoys her involvement in the Club’s Junior Staff program, which encourages service and assists Club members in exploring a career in youth or human services, particularly Boys & Girls Club work.
Curtisa has a passion for giving back to the community and founded the Help the Nation Program which targets the homeless and provides self-care assistance to foster health and well-being. Currently, a junior at James S. Rickards High School, upon graduation, Curtisa plans to become a lawyer to champion causes which benefit society.
Curtisa will be a featured speaker at the upcoming BGCBB 5th Annual Steak & Burger Dinner, which is presented by Publix Super Markets Charities.
The keynote speaker for the evening will be Leonard Hamilton, Florida State University’s all-time winningest men’s basketball head coach. The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019 at the University Center Club at FSU. Proceeds from the event will be used to provide afterschool and summer programs for area at-risk youth. Doors open at 5:30 pm for a VIP reception and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.
