MEDFORD, Ore. —

A team from Sleep in Heavenly Peace spent Saturday building beds for Jackson County kids without a place to sleep of their own. Sponsored by Evergeen Federal Bank, the group of 40 volunteers got together at the Edenvale Winery in Medford to build over 30 beds.

Their goal is to make sure each and every child has a comfortable place to sleep in the area. Their motto is “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”

“I, fortunately, never had that concern,” marketing and communication director Kristin Fettig said. “I couldn’t imagine what that would be like and so it’s awesome just to give that family something that’s just so sweet and to have that safe zone for this kid.”

As a social worker for the past 11 years, Kristin said she witnesses the need for this organization every single day, first hand.

For example, Kristin said the organization found “a really amazing grandmother that took her grandkids in for foster care and she’s been sleeping in her recliner, so they could have her bed.”

Her husband Nathan Fettig, who works as a contractor said he is happy doing what he loves to give back to others.

“I love to building that’s why I do what I do,” Nathan said. “It’s great. I mean, it’s beautiful day, happy people, sunshine and helping people. You know, it feels really good to give back.”

In addition to other volunteers, Kristin’s 11-year-old daughter Dakota decided to help out and do her part.

“I know there are some kids at my school that do need beds,” Dakota Fettig-Jones said. “But, I never really knew beds were so important until SHP started and I heard about it.”

After completing five deliveries, Kristin said the reaction from the families is worth all of the time, energy and hard work.

“We got to experience how warm our hearts felt after that, and kids right then and there, of how thankful they were,” Kristin said.

Each bed frame is delivered and assembled by the volunteers, complete with a set of bedding, a mattress and even a pillow. The organization said plan to hosting another build in June. Anyone interested in receiving a bed can apply on their website.
