Parenthood is one of life’s greatest joys, but there’s no denying that caring for even the most well-behaved kids can take its toll — childcare is a lot of work after all.

It’s important to take care of yourself but as a working or stay-at-home parent, it can be difficult to find alone time. So, here are some self-care activities that promote mental, physical and emotional wellbeing that you and your littles can do together

Unplug & Get Active

Being cooped up inside all day would make any parent slightly stir crazy. Breakaway from the norm and leave behind electronic devices for some family bonding in the great outdoors.

Plan an activity like gardening, biking, or swimming. Even something simple like a walk to the local park or yoga in the backyard can be a fun way to stretch your legs and teach your kids the importance of physical health.

Mental Stimulation

Taking a break from the mental strains of adult life doesn’t have to mean your brain has to stop working completely. Getting the family together for a game night or some crazy puzzles can be a fun way to keep kids stimulated.

Instead of watching a movie, read a book about fantasy and adventure. Even listening to an audiobook is a great way for parents to decompress and kids to stay excited about learning.

Creative Expression

Sometimes getting creative can serve as the perfect way to unwind.

Every parent could take note of the way their kids are naturally free to express themselves. Start a journal and share notes of love and gratitude with each other, channel your artistic side with arts and crafts, or sing and dance to your favorite music.

Indulge

Don’t think that moms and dads shouldn’t pamper themselves once in a while. Treat yourself and your kids to mani-pedis, a new hairstyle, or some much needed retail therapy.

Or opt for a day of relaxation at home. Diffuse your favorite essential oils for some calming aromatherapy, meditate, or even nap. Doing so will elevate your mood and teach your kids the more laid-back side to self-care.

There are no right or wrong ways to take care of yourself. The activities that recharge different parents are just that — different, so find what best fits with your lifestyle. Whether you like to stay active or prefer some R&R, making at least one of these activities a regular part of your routine will help you to reap the full benefits of self-care and family bonding.
