NEW DELHI: A 64-year old man stabbed his wife and airhostess daughter-in-law to death while they were sleeping in the early hours of Friday. The accused, Satish Chaudhary, suspected both women of having extramarital relationships. His grandkids, aged three and one, were in the same room where the murders took place.
Satish, who worked as a private tutor, had latched the door of his younger son Saurabh’s room before attacking his wife Snehlata, 62, and Pragya, 35, who was married to his elder son, police said. Saurabh also sustained injuries while trying to save his mother.
Saurabh later managed to snatch the weapon, a large kitchen knife, locked up his father and called the police. The family stays at Shiva Apartments in Rohini’s Sector V. Pragya worked in IndiGo airlines and her husband Gaurav is a software engineer with a firm in Singapore. He will reach Delhi by Friday night.
Locals and neighbours heard screams from the house around 5am and saw a bleeding Saurabh shifting the children to the neighbour’s house.
The traumatised children had bloodstains on their bodies, the neighbours said.
Man locked son in room before early-hour attack
S D Mishra, deputy commissioner of police, Rohini, said cops received a call at 5.55am from Saurabh informing them about the incident. “The accused, Satish, stabbed them using a big kitchen knife, the kind used by chefs. He was arrested from the house. A case of murder has been registered,” Mishra said.
When police reached the residence, the body of Pragya was found lying on the bed while Snehlata was conscious and in the living room. Saurabh had stab wounds on both his hands. The police rushed the three to hospital, where Pragya was declared brought dead whereas Snehlata passed away during treatment. Saurabh was discharged after being treated for his wounds.
Snehalata had retired as a clerk from the DDA. Like his brother, Saurabh works as a software engineer with a firm in Bengaluru.
“The accused had no remorse for his act. He was relaxed during questioning too,” an officer privy to the investigation said.
According to police, the accused woke up around 4.30am and latched the door of the room where Saurabh was sleeping. In the other bedroom, Pragya with her two children — a daughter aged three and a one-year-old son — was asleep, along with her mother-in-law.
Satish first stabbed his wife who screamed calling out to her son but managed to get rid of him. He then stabbed Pragya multiple times on her stomach, wrist and neck. In the meantime, Snehlata managed to drag herself and unlatched Saurabh’s door who also sustained injuries while trying to save his mother. He then snatched the knife from his father, locked him up in a room and informed the police.
Saurabh sought help from the neighbours next door and moved the children to their house. The neighbour said, “Their daughter was trembling and crying when she came. Even the son started crying as he was put on our lap. We heard screams around 5am and tried to understand what happened but the house was locked from inside. Then Saurabh came and asked us to keep the children, his hands were bleeding too,”
As per the neighbours, Satish never spoke to anyone properly and seemed frustrated. “Compared to the rest of the family, he was a cynical man and always thought he was right,” said Manikant, a worker in the society.
